Case Study || Modbury WwTW
Modbury is in the county of Devon, South West England, three miles south-east of the town of Ivybridge, 11 miles east of the major city of Plymouth. Modbury falls within the district council of South Hams, under the county council of Devon. South West Water Ltd (SWW) are the responsible company for the waste water treatment plant, which is located just off Cottlass Lane.
Modbury waste water treatment plant has like other waste water treatment plants had its discharge consent tightened and as a result the plant marginal on its Total Suspended Solids (TSS) discharge consent. SWW decided to install a MITA TF6 Pile Cloth Drum Filter, even although the new discharge consent would not be implemented until 2022.
SWW working with Advanced Solutions and Technologies Ltd (AS&Tech) based in Tiverton, Devon as well as Keir Integrated Services Ltd also Devon based, so this was truly a Devonshire affair. An area was identified on the site for the installation of the TF6. This area previously housed a microscreen, which had come to the end of its working life.
With the discharge consent currently being <15mg/l, but reducing to <10mg/l in 2022, AS&Tech recommended using a MITA TF6 Pile Cloth Drum Filter. The TF6 offered a range of flow and load variances to SWW, as the site flows ranged from 3.8ltrs/sec to 13ltrs/sec at maximum flow. The solids also ranged from 35mg/l to 40mg/l and were required to be reduced to <10mg/l (see Photo showing solids at 5.8mg/l) to ensure compliance with the new discharge limit when it becomes applicable in 2022.
Since the installation of the MITA TF6 Drumfilter, the site has remained within its TSS compliance, with the average solids being between 5.5 to 6.5mg/l. SWW have since ordered more MITA Pile Cloth Filters, based on the performance and reliability this filter has demonstrated.
