The Problem

Tucked in South Devon, the Modbury Wastewater Treatment Plant was facing a familiar but pressing challenge. Tightened discharge regulations meant the site was operating on the edge of compliance for Total Suspended Solids (TSS).

At the time, the plant needed to meet a limit of <15 mg/l, but with stricter regulations looming - dropping to <10 mg/l by 2022 - it was clear the existing setup wouldn’t cut it for long. The aging microscreen filtration system had reached the end of its operational life, and incoming solids levels of 35–40 mg/l added further pressure.

In short: rising standards, aging infrastructure, and very little margin for error.

The Solution

Rather than wait for compliance issues to arise, South West Water Ltd took a proactive approach. Working with local partners Advanced Solutions and Technologies Ltd and Kier Integrated Services Ltd, they replaced the outdated microscreen with a TF6 Pile Cloth Drum Filter.

The TF6 was selected for its ability to handle variable flows (3.8–13 l/s) and fluctuating solids loads - critical for a site with inconsistent operating conditions. Crucially, it offered the performance headroom needed to not just meet current standards, but future-proof the plant against tighter regulations.

The Result

The impact was immediate and measurable.

TSS levels dropped well below target, averaging 5.5–6.5 mg/l
The plant comfortably achieved compliance ahead of the 2022 regulation change
Operational reliability improved, reducing risk and maintenance concerns

What was once a borderline system became a consistently high-performing one. So much so that South West Water didn’t stop at Modbury - they went on to order additional Pile Cloth Filters, confident in the technology’s performance.
